The Latvian economy since 2000 has
been one of the fastest expanding in the European Union,
with growth annually averaging almost 9.0%. In 2006 the
economy grew 12.2% and a further 10.3% in 2007. The IMF in
forecasting a consolidation in the pace of growth for 2008,
to around 3.6%.
Since 1999 Latvia is a member of
the World Trade Organisation and since 2004 it is a member
of the Europeaj Union. Latvia plans to introduce the
Euro
as the country's currency but, due to the inflation
being above
EMU's guidelines, this is unlikely to happen before
2010.
